Photoshoot pictures

This is a picture of both of my model's together, back to back, standing fierce showing that they are here for a purpose. This picture states 'this is not the last you'll see of us'. This was one of the main/strongest pictures which were taken. It shows the dominance of young people who are making their way up from the bottom into the music industry. This is an introduction picture. A long shot was used here to capture the full picture of both models.
This is another picture of both of the models together. This is more of an attitude picture, both concentrating deeply into the picture showing no emotions stating that this is a serious picture. Here again a semi long shot was used.
This is a picture of my female model sharon. This was just a cheeky picture of her back, this photography of her wasnt used in the main magazine. A medium close up shot was used here to capture her main features.
This is another picture of my female model sharon. This is a seductive picture of her, showing the dominance of female artists. A medium close up shot was also used here.
Once again, this is another sexy/seductive picture of my model, This is more of a relaxed sexy picture. In this picture she looks like she is ready to take on any challenge which may be coming her way which would take her to where she wants to be in the music industry. A medium close up shot was also used here.
This again is a picture of both of my models together.
This is a clear medium close up shot of my model rico doing the 'so-soon' hand gesture.
Long shot of my model showing off his clothing (swag)
A calm but nice medium close up shot of my model sharon.

The process of creating my magazine

Here it shows the different stages during the process of completing my magazine. The First picture and the third picture was the last design that i decided to go with as i thought it was the best i could do until I had a reality check by seeing the other front covers my friends were designing and decided that i had to switch it up. The rest of the pictures is my contents page and how i started to design it.
Here it shows my first design of how I originally planned to have my first cover and it shows the different stages that i went through. The last picture is one of the designs that i was contemplating to make my front cover.
This was the final product. Looking at how i changed it, i made a drastic change to the front cover, changing the fonts, pictures and colour. Personally, i believe that this magazine front cover was the better one.  The last picture is how my front cover actually looks like.

Magazine Newsstand

Magazine Newsstand Task

The music magazines are in the 'men's lifestyle' section and are surrounded by magazines about various sports and technologies. We can see how the publishers have taken this into account by making the front covers with bolder text. The mastheads are big and loud, therefore suggesting that these magazines are geared more toward men.

In this newsstand, the magazines are placed on top of each other. This means that you can see the top quarter of the magazines but not necessarily the left third, as it is with other newsstand set-ups. In this picture, we can see how most publishers have anticipated this newsstand set-up by putting the masthead in the top quarter so you can see which magazine is which.

Here, we can see how the publishers have used the top quarter of the magazine to grab the reader's attention. We can already tell that the mastheads are seemingly always in the top quarter, but there are also skylines in the top quarter - on Kerrang! There is the skyline about posters; on NME there is the offer for an exclusive CD; on Total Guitar there is the splash; and on Q there is the skyline for three articles, two of which have pictures.

We can also see in this picture how the publishers have also used the left third to compensate for other newsstand set-ups. On Kerrang! there is the splash advertising the competition to win tickets to a tour; on NME the masthead is in the left third, and as you can see in the picture below, the free gift mentioned in the top quarter appears in the left third; on Total Guitar the splash is also in the left third; and on Q the masthead is also in the left third.

Magazine Proposal

Proposal of magazine:

I will be creating a music magazine which is going to be called Turn up and is targeted towards younger generation.  The magazine would be a Hip hop/ RnB / Rap Genre. I have chosen this name because it symbolises the fact that everything in the magazine is going to be wild and interested, it’s not going to be ordinary but it’s going to be turned up.

Kind Of Artist: The artist I have chosen, I have chosen him because the music that he produces fits in well with the magazine genre that I’m doing, also as the artist is an upcoming artist, it will be a good to promote his material and show support, and also to gain him some acknowledgement. I have also chosen this artist because, as my magazine is Hip Hop, RnB and Rap, as an African American artist who is making different types of music, he fits in to the category well.

The things I’m going to include in my magazine: Regular quizzes to keep the readers engaged not only about the music stuff but also regular activities. Exclusive artist interviews with upcoming artists or people with music industry. Also the opportunity for people to win prizes which could consist of the latest gadgets or tickets to shows.

How my magazine would be different: My magazine would be different from most magazines because instead of my magazine being about artists who have already made it, my magazine would be about upcoming artists who are on the process of making it but haven’t made it just as yet. This is a unique factor about my magazine, because it’s something that hasn’t been created yet but it’s something that I will be creating.

Design Features: The colour scheme of my magazine would be based upon the cover picture and the colour clothing that my artist would be wearing, this will also be the colour scheme that my masthead will fall in to. The masthead would be bold and simple and clear. I would be getting my design from www.dafont.com  ; if not from there I would be getting it from www.gorefonts.co.uk. I want my masthead to be clear and simple so that it becomes easily recognisable and also it goes with the genre of the magazine, if I was doing a rock magazine then I would want something which is extreme. As the magazine would be called ‘Turn up’ that does all the talking.

Who might publish my magazine?  I believe that if my magazine was to be published by someone, it will be published by the producers of Young Voices. Young voices are similar magazine type, they specialise in the same genres but not quite the same as my magazine because they do all types of artists, and however my magazine is about upcoming talents. Young voices would be the best producer for it, because it’s about the young voices, and my magazine specialises in young voices particularly.

Target Audience:  My target audience is mainly for young people aged 14-21. It’s suitable for both genders. I’ve selected this age range because as the magazine is up coming artists, adults wont really pay attention to the people they are not aware of, whereas people between the age range would be more familiar to the type of music that the young artists are producing and may even know them. The magazine would mainly also be targeted towards Afro-Caribbean people. This is because of the genre of the magazine, however it’s a multi-cultural magazine and open/available to everyone.

Audience feedback & evaluation

Audience feedback and Evaluation

Audience Feedback

Positive: ‘’ I like the image it shows how she is actually in a college the long shot shows her surroundings and it’s also quite clear which attracts readers and makes it easier for them to rad and the colours are a nice combination and its not to bright or too dark, the masthead is very clear and bold, which makes you recognise it easily.’’

‘’I like the magazine the picture catches my eye instantly!’’

‘’ I like the way the magazine is structured’

‘’It’s not overcrowded, it’s a straight forward picture which is not too busy and it shows an individual rather than a group picture to show that everyone is an individual and nobody is the same.’’

‘’ The magazine is good, I love the colours that are used.’’

‘’ I love the name of the student magazine’’

‘’The title is bold, clear and you can immediately tell that the magazine is from a college. It is easy to recognise and catch the target audience’s attention. The image clearly displays a student working and it is not interrupted with cover lines, so you can tell that the magazine is going to be for students.”

Above, shows some of the feedback that I received from my friends. According to the feedback, my masthead was done well and the picture was clear and a straight forward indicator that my magazine had a relation with a college. I’m also aware that the magazine is attractive and grabs thereader’s attention instantly, as one of the feedback states, it emphasis the relevance of each pupil by one pupil representing the college by being the main picture and being the soul of the magazine.

·        What went well?

Photography- Taking pictures was the simplest part of the whole task ad all I had to do was take relevant pictures of the things that I was going to include in my magazine. As I was taking pictures, I decided to take a variety of pictures then at the end, look at the range of pictures that I had and choose which one that I found suitable for a front cover and also one the met the requirements.  Taking the pictures was not very time consuming as it only took me about 30 minutes or even less. The process of uploading the pictures to my account was also quick. Overall, I found the photography section was fairly easy.

Image manipulation on Photoshop- Changing the picture around in Photoshop was an easy process as the picture did not require any major adjustments only resizing the picture was needed and I found that quite a complex task.

Page Layout-The layout of the magazine was easy to design, as all you had to do was to create a margin so that all the writing and images were within a certain amount of space. Creating the margins was not a long or tricky process, all I had to do was drag the corners and place it on each angle of the layout of the magazine.

Text- Including the text my magazine was not hard as on the side of the software, there was an icon which had ‘T’ on which meant you clicked that if you wanted to insert a text. The masthead was also less time consuming as I already knew what I was going to call my magazine and all I had to do was create it in text in really large fonts at put it where I thought it looked best, which is the top middle of the page. Creating cover lines was one part that I found a bit tricky, not because didn’t know how to use the text or how to move it around, but because I wasn’t sure of what cover lines that I should use, and one that would go with the whole theme of the magazine, but once I decided on what I was going to write, everything came along pretty easy, things such as the font and colour.

What do I need to improve on?

What I think I need to improve on is making sure that I use the correct image type, for example, if I was meant to use a medium shot, I use it instead of using a long shot then having to crop it down or resize it. I also need to work on some minor designs of the magazine such as the cover lines and where the barcode goes and the sizes of it.

Three Key points for development for main task:

·        Plan carefully: Make sure I know what I’m going write and where everything is going to go. Make sure I know the price of the magazine and all the little details.

·        Take the correct sized images- For example, long shot, medium shot etc...

·        Use my time wisely-  don’t fall off track, keep ahead of my tasks

This was the masthead which was voted as the best from my class and the masthead which I decided I was going to use on my magazine. I thought this masthead had a unique type of effect to it which made it stand out; it’s also eye-catching and can be used to grab the reader’s attention.

I liked this masthead but chose not to use it because I feel that it wouldn’t go with the sort of magazine that I was producing, this type of design has a more childish effect to it, and wouldn’t grab the my targeted audience’s attention. If I was to use it, it would have clashed with my magazine.

This masthead was too calm. It looked like the sort of masthead you will find in a gospel magazine, it wasn’t the sort of masthead which would be used in a magazine for afro-Caribbean up-coming artists.
With this masthead, it looks like the type you will find for a rock type of magazine. It didn’t look right; I wasn’t going to fit in with my magazine.

This masthead was too thin; it’s not really a conventional masthead which would attract people’s attention, especially the attention of the audience I would want it to attract.

This masthead was too child-like, it looks like the sort of masthead you will find in a children’s magazine, I didn’t think that it was age appropriate.

This was my second favourite masthead. I think it was nice and bold and also a conventional masthead, this looked like the sort of masthead you will see in a hip-hop/RnB magazine. However, I didn’t use it because I thought it was too formal. I wanted something which was a little less formal.

Case Study's

The front cover of this addition of vibe magazine features Usher they make it very clear that he is the main model and that the main article will be about him. The colour scheme of the cover is consistent; it includes yellow, black and white. the masthead is the boldest text on the page not only because it needs to stand out against the background but because it’s the name of the brand. Despite some of the masthead being covered by the model, the readers will still recognise the brand because it is so well known. After doing some research into other Vibe magazines, I have found that the masthead /house style is in the same font on every edition, the only real change is the colour which depends on the theme. At the top of the page is a skyline, it has a list of other artists that will be featured in the magazine, this is written in yellow so that it stands out, however it isn’t bold so it doesn’t over power the masthead. Other cover lines on the cover are along the left hand side, most of it is written in yellow so it can stand out against that part if the page as the background is quite dark there and so that it catches the eye of the reader, the parts that a written in white are less important that is why it is written in a smaller font.
Under the cover lines on the left are where the barcode and website is. They are all in backed up onto a white background to make it stand out against the main image. They have also included a QR code (Quick Response) which can be used with smart phones to allow easy access to their app and the virtual world of Vibe. On the bottom right side of the page is another cover line, however it is under the main cover line and it isn’t as bold as it’s in a smaller font. The main cover line stands out the most out of all the cover lines because both the white and yellow text is in quite a big font, this is so it can draw the attention of the reader.
The back ground/main image of the cover is of usher, because he is in front of the masthead it creates the illusion thatches walking towards the readers. His body language seems cool and relaxed like he’s just casually walking; however when you consider the back ground and the location of the image it doesn’t seem so casual, it makes the audience think that he’s brave and somewhat superior. This illustration is also seen through his costume, the jumpsuit he is wearing is meant to be a uniform however he’s wearing it open this makes him seem rebellious also his sunglasses make it look like his deceiving the audience because they can’t see where is looking.

I have chosen to analyse a double page spread from R&B/ Hip-hop magazine Vibe. This double page article is about Solange Knowles. It places a lot of importance on the way the person on the magazine is portrayed. The colours of the font that has been used on this magazine are black grey and blue which contrasts with what the R&B artist Solange Knowles is wearing. The colour of the text is dull whilst the colour of the dress is bright which means that most of the attention should go towards her and it’s also a technique which is used to make her stand out. She is wearing a short red attractive dress with pink stilettos which compliments her dress. The red dress indicates that she is a confident person, red usually doesn’t go unnoticed by people and she is not scared to be the centre of the attention, as the dress is red and the way she is portrayed by her standing position, makes her look provocative.  As the colours of the fonts that have been used on this article are pretty dull this shows that Solange Knowles is the core of the magazine and she is the most key thing on the magazine. On the other hand, her name is written in blue which stands out to the reader again showing the importance of her being on the magazine. Quotes have been taken out of the article and have been written in bold showing that what she has to say will be heard and is significant to the reader. In the quote it says ‘’forget her sister the outspoken Solange Knowles ….’’This comes to show that she does no longer need her sister the famous BeyoncĂ© to be big as she has already made it herself the red attractive dress she is wearing could symbolise this.  Also many other pictures have been used of her, as in the background she is posing in many different ways, which again adds emphasis to the fact that she is the soul of the magazine and her presence cannot be ignored and must be acknowledged. The magazine is aimed at both genders males and females. This magazine places a lot of importance on trying to create a sexy but bossy picture, which may advertise women’s importance and them being dominant.
This magazine uses very basic contrasting colour scheme such as black, blue and pink. The main image that’s been used in the music magazine is larger than the rest of the images used. The biggest image is the only image that’s in colour this gives the reader something to focus on and is the most appealing image on the page. The image used in the magazine is a very stereotypical sort of view of an R&B/Hip-hop artist the woman in the magazine is of a black origin and is showing parts of her body and is posing in a sexual way. The double spread page was a chance for her to share her success with her fans and to finally express herself as just her but not as the label of ‘BeyoncĂ©’s little sister’.

With this contents page, the picture used is seductive which automatically grabs the reader’s attention. Ciara, the artist in the content page, is wearing a play suit with sexy heels which represents her image. The features of the magazine are placed on the right side within the space of her body, so there is no way that you can miss the writing. As they have used a seductive picture, that is used as an advantage because the writing on the features can then be small, but you will still be focused on trying to see what the features are about.
The contents page is also very dull coloured with not that much writing, but the picture of Ciara is used as there USP, as it is what makes the contents page appealing and attractive.  The style of the contents is a feature which is used constantly and it’s exclusive to the vibe brand. It also gives the model recognition and the actual content of the magazine is written in a column.

As well as the other picture, this too is a seductive image. However, unlike the other contents page, this one is more colorful and bright; the images are eye-catching for both men and women.  The contents masthead is unique to the vibe magazine by the way it’s structured out. The masthead also stands out because it’s bold against the background and it’s easy to recognize  Next to it, there’s a page number and that corresponds to the artist to highlight that there in the issue of the magazine and they are the main body of that specific page. The contents are within a column with the rest of the text.
At the bottom right hand side there is text that describes the artists and says a bit about them and this could be to give them a bit of recognition, so that the audience are aware of whom they are.  The shot of the image is a long shot which allows the audience to see the whole frame, the facial expressions and the body language and to set an atmosphere of the magazine. The body language also suggests that they are confident females with a bit of attitude.
The costumes that they are wearing portray a provocative nature and highlight the fact that sex sells. The image is taken in a studio rather than a specific location which gives it a professional edge.
There are approximately 3 different fonts in the page and the title is in a different font then the departments and this could be to attract the readers to the different sections of the magazine.  Some of the texts on the page is bold and this could be to highlight it and make it more noticeable.

My second double page spread is a picture of the famous RnB singer Usher. On the left hand side there is a large close up picture of him which is quite distinctive and clear to see, whilst on the right there is a page with text which is his interview the question and answers. Usher is a prominent black male, RnB artist that the audience of Vibe can easily be familiar with. This double page spread has given the image of Usher an entire page to its self, with the writing on the other, this is not a rare convention thought it isn’t very abundant either. It does allow for better use of space and for a bigger image to be displayed as well.
Usher is wearing a denim shirt which is casual apparel despite it being G-Star Raw; a designer brand but that is to be expected from an artist of Ushers caliber  He is also smoking a Cuban thick cigar which shows sophistication, class and style, they wouldn't have made him smoke a cigarette because that’s cheap and it doesn't represent a man of his wealth. He is wearing a wristwatch that appears to a tailored made piece that is very great value; these are clear connotations of wealth. Usher is also not looking directly at the camera making it seem as though he is “too superior” for the camera or he is more interested with what is in the corner as opposed to the camera.
The quote that is in the top right corner is in bold and is an extract from the text portion of the DPS, the word greatest is highlighted to emphasize the importance of the word and its importance to Usher.
Usher uses very informal language when answering the interviewer, the purpose of this section is to give the reader a sense of what the artist about, their plans for the future, how they feel about other artists, etc. The quotation on the image makes a bold statement about Usher and his aims for his future. “Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer that ever lived. I just want to be the Greatest entertainer living” the word greatest is in bold in the quote and the text itself gives an idea of what Usher is about, he makes a bold claim comparing himself to Michael Jackson who still is one of the biggest names in the music industry to date. It represents a positive sense of arrogance that any artist needs have when they have reached his level of fame. But that is all put across with that statement.
